The unexpected success of Star Wars’ theatrical debut in 1977 changed the face of cinema for-ever. In parts fairy tale, Western and 1930s movie serial, the rousing space opera smashed all box office records, becoming a worldwide popular culture phenomenon and spawning one of the most successful movie franchises of all time.
As previously discussed, the menace Darth Vader is widely disputed amongst fans of the franchise, as whether or not he was truly evil, turned evil or a bit of both. As we know Anakin Skywalker to want to bring balance to the force, but had been corrupted by the Evil Empire Palpatine, a Sith lord, which we see Darth Vader defeat in the end of the trilogy ‘Return of the Jedi’.
Whilst Darth Vader is arguably one of the strongest Sith Lords, and easily the most emotional, fans loved witnessing the internal struggle between Anakin & Vader, how both are two sides of the same coin, one looking for redemption, apologetic for his actions, and the other so twisted by the dark side of the force they are unable to reconnect with their humanity. With the ending of Return of the Jedi resulting in Darth Vaders demise, we see a glimmer of hope, when Anakin is presented as the iconic ‘Force Ghost’ later adapted to Hayden Christensen in the films.
But Darth Vader’s reign does not end with the trilogy, we later see a young Ben Solo, now going by the name of ‘Kylo Ren’ looking up admirably to his grandfather, Darth Vader. As the latest adaptation in the Star Wars universe announced that Leia and Han Solo’s son Ben, was corrupted by the dark side of the force, just as his Grandfather was. We see Kylo, reach out to Vader, asking for strength and guidance, allowing him to do what his Grandfather was incapable of.
